Founded in 1902 as a settlement house to help New York’s increasing
immigrant population adjust to life in a new country, Greenwich
House today offers a variety of programs and approaches that
continue to provide thousands of New Yorkers with health and
wellness support, education, personal enrichment, skills building
and cultural experiences. Position Summary Faculty at Greenwich
House Pottery teach ceramic-based studio courses in wheel throwing,
hand building, technical or historical areas, and administer to all
preparatory phases of their development. Classes take place one day
per week, either mornings, afternoons or evenings, for 6 to 12
consecutive weeks. A faculty member will hold no more than three
12-week classes within a single term. Responsibilities Provide
comprehensive instructions and demonstrate techniques of assigned
course. Be knowledgeable in all ceramic processes and techniques,
from wheel throwing, to hand building, to glaze formulation, to
kiln firing information, etc. Prepare course curriculum, syllabus
and annual course descriptions and oversee clean-up of classes.
Offer individual instruction on a need basis. Review GHP studio
policies and guidelines and ensure proper classroom behavior.
Develop group projects, schedule class trips, present slide
lectures as needed. Coordinate special activities such as kiln
firings with Studio Manager and monthly class gallery visits with
Gallery and Residency Manager. Attend annual faculty meetings and
communicate relevant problems, issues, suggestions to the Education
Coordinator, Education Manager, or Studio Manager and the Pottery
School Directors. Perform other tasks and special projects as
assigned by the direct supervisor. Qualifications BFA in ceramics
or equivalent knowledge and experience. MFA preferred. An
artist/practitioner within the field of ceramics. Minimum 1 year of
experience teaching. Knowledge of community-based arts education
programs. Excellent organizational, oral and written communication
skills. Ability to interact with a diverse student body and all
levels of staff at Greenwich House Pottery. Knowledgeable in all
ceramic processes and techniques: wheel throwing, hand building,
glaze formulation, kiln firing information, etc. Reasonable
