Job Description Job Description Description Job Summary The NYPL
is hiring Tutors to provide homework help and enrichment activities
to elementary grade students in 32 branch libraries during the
2022-2023 school year. The Lead Tutor is also responsible for
overseeing the logistical implementation of the program at their
assigned location day-to-day. Lead Tutors will work 16 hours per
week, M-Th, during the program hours of approximately 3-6 PM with
additional hours required for professional development, meetings,
and preparation. Lead Tutors will work approximately 36 weeks per
year, September 14, 2022 through June 15, 2022. The Lead Tutor will
not be scheduled to work the weeks of December 19, December 26,
February 20, April 10, nor will they be scheduled to work during
any federal holidays. Responsibilities: Oversee daily procedures at
sites, including administrative procedures, collaborating with
branch staff about enrichment activities, and managing other
logistics, Serve as the communication liaison for the program, Act
as the point-person for parent/caregiver communication, Support
Teen Reading Ambassador Pages assigned to each location, Work in
small groups with students to provide them with academic tutoring
to improve their understanding of math, reading, social studies
and/or science, at all levels, Attend periodic staff meetings for
youth evaluation and information exchange among Tutors, Library
staff, Teen Reading Ambassador Pages, and supervisors Use best
practices when tutoring students, Develop positive relationships
with students that foster their academic and personal growth,
Administer enrichment activities to students in the afterschool
hours, Support the Children’s Librarian and other branch staff in
the implementation of programs in the afterschool hours, May be
assigned to work in other program sites, Performs other duties
assigned Required Education, Experience & Skills Required Education
and Certifications HS Diploma or equivalent required Required
Experience Prior experience working in a formal or informal
education setting with children and/or teens Experience teaching
and/or tutoring in multiple subject areas Required Skills Effective
communication skills when working with children, parents,
co-workers, and supervisors, Interest in urban library services,
Interest in helping children to improve their reading, writing,
math, social studies, and science skills, Possess a concrete
understanding of basic elementary Math, Science, English, History,
and Foreign Language concepts, Computer and basic technology skills
such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications Ability to
speak foreign languages preferred Managerial/Supervisory
Responsibilities: Informal mentorship of Teen Reading Ambassador
Pages and Tutors Preferred Qualifications Current enrollment in an
undergraduate degree program, with at least two or more years
completed or equivalent experience, at an approved accredited
educational institution Bachelor’s degree More Please Note:
Effective August 2, 2021, absent a qualifying exception for medical
or religious reasons, newly hired employees of the New York Public
Library must present proof of receipt of a COVID-19 vaccination and
may not begin employment at the Library until 14 days after their
receipt of their second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna
vaccines or 14 days after their first dose of the Johnson & Johnson
vaccine. Newly hired employees who need additional time to receive
their vaccination prior to their start date may request an
adjournment of their start date with their hiring manager. The
Library will consider such requests on a case by case basis,
depending upon the Library’s operational needs, among other
factors. The Library will further consider exemptions for
prospective employees who cannot become vaccinated due to a
qualifying medical condition or a sincerely held religious belief
or practice. Candidates who receive a conditional offer of
employment and who seek a medical or religious exemption to the
Library’s vaccination policy will be provided with additional
