The American Lung Association has a great opportunity for a Specialist, Health Promotions to join our incredible team in the Northeast Region. Working as a member of the Health Promotion & Education Team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education and advocacy. In this role, you will be responsible to coordinate, implement and evaluate lung health programs throughout Putnam, Orange, Westchester and Rockland Counties as well as establish relationships with media sources and participate in program sustainability. This is a grant funded position. Responsibilities Coordinate projects to educate about "Tobacco Retail Environment Initiative" - Implement actions to address the impact of tobacco marketing, price promotion and flavors in the retail environment and work to de-normalize and de-glamorize tobacco use. Implement education campaign on the effects of tobacco marketing; to include community events, youth-based organizations, influential community groups, etc. Develop and engage allies to educate and advance the efforts of the tobacco retail initiative. Collaborate with organizations representing groups that are disproportionately affected by retail tobacco marketing to assist with the tobacco retail initiative. Communicate monthly with local coalition groups, community members and government decision makers the impact of tobacco marketing on youth initiation; communication to include mailings, petitions/postcards of support, in-person meetings. Communicate with news outlets regarding prevalence of retail tobacco marketing and its impact on youth and the local community and activate partners to garner earned media. Coordinate "Tobacco-Free Outdoors Initiative" - for municipalities and major employers. Implement actions to reduce or eliminate tobacco use in outdoor areas. Work with municipalities and business leaders to develop tobacco-free policies. Develop and engage allies to educate and advance the efforts of the tobacco-free outdoor initiative. Collaborate with youth-focused organizations, environmental organizations, and health advocacy groups to assist with the tobacco-free outdoors initiative. Provide technical assistance to municipalities and businesses throughout the entire process of transitioning to a tobacco-free outdoor environment. Communicate with news outlets regarding tobacco-free outdoor areas and its impact on the local community and activate partners to garner earned media. Coordinate "Smoke-Free Housing Initiative" - Implement actions to promote smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing with a strong emphasis on policies that protect the health of low-income residents. Educate on the benefits of smoke-free housing; to include tenants, organizational policy-makers, elected officials, etc. Develop and engage allies to publicly support smoke-free policies for multi-unit housing. Provide technical assistance to landlords and property management companies throughout the entire process of transitioning to smoke-free multi-unit housing. Administrative Functions Submit monthly reports for the CAT System. Communicate with coalition monthly via email with requests for support; i.e. LTEs, community event participation, etc. Provide updates at quarterly coalition meetings. Attend NYS DOH Tobacco Control Program meetings and trainings as required. Maintain coalition website, Facebook and Twitter; updates, current initiatives, news articles, track online petitions. Research, develop and maintain databases for coalition members, organizations, events, local leaders, legislators. Participate in and support all area events. Serve on ALA's regional and national workgroups and committees as requested. Develop and submit timely reports as required by the association and funding sources, including but not limited to weekly updates in the American Lung Association's (ALA) data base, monthly management reports, grant reports and program metrics reports. Represent the association as a member of community, civic and/or health coalitions and organizations related to the ALA's mission. Build, maintain and cultivate relationships with funders, facilitators, and community partners to encourage program delivery, sustainability, and growth across four counties, including ALA signature programs where applicable. Select and participate in local, state and national seminars and courses designed to increase skills and knowledge related to job requirements. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree in public health or related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Minimum two years of experience developing and implementing community awareness, education, and programs specifically related to areas of public health. Prior experience in public health, community relations, public policy, and/or advocacy. Must be a self-starter with excellent communication skills both written and oral. Ability to multi task in a faced paced environment. Positive attitude with the ability to work independently and in a team environment. Ability to lift approximately 25 lbs. Able to work with minimum direct supervision, make decisions, and take initiative. Proven ability to cultivate and steward relationships across a diverse population. Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends with some overnights required. Must have a valid driver's license. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
